Colorado Springs, Colo. --- After guiding the Spartans defense throughout two victories over the weekend San José State sophomore Kristen Amarikwa has been named the Mountain West (MW) Defensive Player of the Week.
Amarikwa anchored SJSU’s backline which shutout Nevada in the Spartans’ 2-0 win on Friday. Then the MW’s top offensive team came into San Jose on Sunday and was limited to a season-low seven shots under Amarikwa’s watch.
“I’m really happy that Kristen is being recognized by the conference,” said SJSU head coach Lauren Hanson. “She has played multiple defensive positions throughout the season and is instrumental in our team’s success defensively.”
The Bakersfield, Calif., native and the Spartans’ defense held the Rebels to just a pair of shots in the final 45 minutes. Meanwhile, San José State scored three times in the second half and came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat UNLV.
The two wins last week helped the Spartans maintain first place in the MW.
Amarikwa becomes the fourth Spartan this season to be a MW Player of the Week. That’s the most of any team in the conference.
