The Spartans had not scored as many as four goals in a single game since a 4-1 win over Boise State, also at home, back on October 18, 2002.
Freshman Liz Behlen, SJSU’s leading scorer heading into the game, had a pair of goals, including the opener, unassisted at 13:33, and the Spartans’ final goal, off a feed from sophomore Erica Ng-Pinkerton, in the 62nd minute to make it 4-1. Behlen’s goal total on the season now stands at five, with three in her last two matches.
Sophomore Kristin Krale gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage at the break, as she took a cross from the right by freshman defender Brittny Beshore and put it past Aggie goalkeeper Kelli Allred in the 36th minute. Sophomore defender and preseason All-WAC selection Jackie Cruz then scored a spectacular goal at 49:31, dribbling through a couple of defenders before blasting a shot from distance into the far corner for her first collegiate score.
“Jackie (Cruz) scored the greatest goal I’ve seen since I’ve been here, Liz (Behlen) is a first-team All-WAC-caliber player, and Adrienne (Herbst) did a great job again” commented Spartan head coach Dave Siracusa. “It’s been a while since this program has scored four goals in a game. Generally, we played really well, and it was nice to be able to play some people that don’t normally get a chance to play.”
Charity Weston and Abby Hunt were the goalscorers for the visiting Aggies, in the 58th and 89th minute, respectively. Allred made one save in 68 minutes before giving way to Lisa Willardson. In goal for SJSU, senior Adrienne Herbst made six saves on the night.
With their second consecutive victory, the Spartans move their record to 2-10-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. Utah State, in its first year in the WAC, fell to 4-7-3, 1-1.
San Jose State next travels to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech in more conference action this Sunday, October 16, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
