Nicole Irwin named to Soccer Buzz national "Elite Team of the Week"

San Jose State University midfielder Nicole Irwin has been named to the Soccer Buzz women’s soccer national “Elite Team of the Week.”

Irwin, a junior from Dublin, Calif., and Dublin High School, scored three goals, including two game-winners, and added one assist for seven total points in a pair of shutout victories to open the 2006 Western Athletic Conference season last week. She now leads the Spartans in goals scored with four and total points with 10. Three of her goals have been game-winners.

Irwin becomes the first San Jose State player to earn national team of the week honors in the program’s 12-year history. A total of 18 players from over 5,000 around the nation in the NCAA Division I who see action on most weeks, were selected for the honor. Irwin had already earned WAC offensive “Player of the Week” recognition for the first time in her career on Monday.

San Jose State is 5-8-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in WAC play for the first time since the Spartans joined the conference for the 1996 season. The Spartans’ best league start previously was 2-0-1 in 2000, with two victories following a tie at Hawai’i to open the WAC slate. San Jose State is alone in first place in the latest conference standings, with the full six points from two games.

The Spartans travel to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State on Friday, October 13. San Jose State then returns home for a meeting with Louisiana Tech on Sunday, October 15. Kick-off at Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The San Jose State men’s soccer team will also play host to a conference foe in Air Force at 12:00 p.m., as part of a Spartan doubleheader.
