Paige Simoneau Wins Mountain West Defensive Player Of The Week

Oct. 9, 2017

Colorado Springs, Colo. --- The Mountain West has announced San José State goalkeeper Paige Simoneau as the league's defensive player of the week for matches through October 8.

The junior from Corona, Calif., allowed one goal in 200 minutes of action and helped vault the Spartans into first place in the Mountain West table with a tie at San Diego State and a win at New Mexico.

Simoneau had a career-high eight saves on the way to a shutout in last Friday night's match at San Diego State. She stopped an Aztecs penalty kick in the 52nd minute and didn't allow a goal in 110 minutes as the Spartans picked up a point for the 0-0 tie.

She nearly had another shutout two days later against New Mexico, but the Lobos broke through in the 82nd minute for the only goal of the week against Simoneau.

The Spartans picked up three points for the 2-1 win and returned to San Jose in first place after a four-game road trip.

It is the third Mountain West "player of the week" award for a Spartan this season. Simoneau joins fellow keeper Ana Calero and forward Dorthe Hoppius as winners during 2017.
