SAN JOSE, Calif. - A lone goal off a corner kick in the 16th minute was all Fresno State needed Saturday night, as the Bulldogs hung on to defeat San Jose State for the first time since 2008, 1-0, at Spartan Stadium in a Western Athletic Conference match.
Molly Nizzoli played the ball in the air off the corner kick to the center of the box, where Kayla Kret headed it towards the goal. Kret's shot hit off the crossbar and bounced directly to the ground in front of the net. Callie Hancock was there to finish the play with a header of her own to give Fresno State (8-3-3, 2-0 WAC) a 1-0 lead that would stand.
"It was pretty back and forth," San Jose State head coach Jeff Leightman said. "It was a good game. Both teams battled and either team could have easily won the game. I thought our playing spirit was good. I was really proud of our effort and we want to play them again."
San Jose State (3-10, 1-1 WAC) had the first scoring chance of the game when Megan Molina took a through pass from Catherine Ruder and charged into the box. Molina's shot banged off the crossbar before going out of bounds for a goal kick.
San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald only allowed the one goal while making seven saves. Fresno State 'keeper Katie DeVault made four stops in goal. The Spartans were outshot 12-4 in the first half, and 16-9 overall in the game.
The 1-0 loss is the Spartans' fifth one-goal loss of the season. Fresno State's first half goal broke San Jose State's six-game streak of shutting out its opponent in the first half.
San Jose State continues its WAC schedule on Sunday, Oct. 16, when it travels to Hawaii to face the Rainbow Wahine.
"I think every point (in the WAC standings) is going to count," Leightman said. I think there's going to be a lot of teams in the middle. We want to look forward to Hawaii. It's tough to win on the islands. They play tough at home, so that's really our shift in focus right now."
