San Jose, Calif.---- San Jose State women's soccer team battled the University of Hawai'i to a 1-1 tie in a double-overtime in its Western Athletic Conference match Friday night, October 8. SJSU moved to 6-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the WAC.
San Jose State staked a 1-0 lead after Jessica Ingram scored in the 24th minute off an assist from Kayla Santacruz. The Rainbow Wahine hung on despite being out-shot, 12-2 in the first-half.
"Putting it in the goal was a shocker for me," stated Ingram on her third goal of the season. "I saw the gap and took the shot. It was just my day for putting it away."
After the University of Hawai'i (2-10-2, 0-2-1 WAC) fell behind 1-0 in the first-half, Britanni Lum evened up the score with her first career-goal in the 64th minute on a 20-yard shot. Both teams played scoreless soccer for the remainder of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
"I thought we were really good tonight, except for the final finish," stated head coach Jeff Leightman. "I can't ask for much more, and we probably created more quality chances then we have had all season. We found the goal keepers hands tonight instead of the back of the net, and it was one of those nights where the ball would not go in."
The Spartans dominated on shots, shooting a season-high 25, compared to the Rainbow Wahine's nine. The tie stretches San Jose State's unbeaten streak to six and is the first draw of the recent run of success.
Goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald made two saves for the night and keeper Kanani Taaca recorded seven saves.
Next up for the Spartans is a non-conference match against UC Davis on Sunday, October 10. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
