Women's Soccer Win First WAC Match of Season

Reno, Nev.—Despite being outshot 17-11, the San Jose State women’s soccer team got goals from Nicole Irwin and Heather Oranje as the Spartans defeated Nevada, 2-1 Friday night in a Western Athletic Conference match in Reno.

San Jose State started the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match. Vanessa Afonso sent a corner kick to the head of Heather Dickinson. Dickinson then headed the ball towards the Nevada net where Nicole Irwin found the ball and flicked it in the net for a 1-0 Spartan lead.

The Spartans continued the scoring in the second half as Heather Oranje scored the eventual game winner in the 60th minute of the match. She found a deflected shot and put it in the back of the net to give SJSU a 2-0 lead.

San Jose State held Nevada scoreless until the 76th minute when Lauren Kinneman scored on a free kick from 22 yards out. Spartan goal Adrienne Herbst made 11 saves in the victory.

The win gives SJSU its first WAC win of the season and in improves the team’s record to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the WAC. The Spartans travel to Boise State Sunday for 12 p.m. MDT match.
