Women's Soccer: Spartans On The Road For Three Games

This week: The San Jose State University women's soccer team plays three road games this week. On Tuesday, the Spartans are in Moraga, Calif. for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game against Saint Mary's College. The Spartans then return to Western Athletic Conference action Friday with a 3:00 p.m. (CT) game at TCU. The week concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. (CT) game at conference leader SMU.

Records: San Jose State is 6-8-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the WAC. The Spartans are in third place in the conference standings.

Opponents/series record: Saint Mary's is 6-4-2 overall, 1-0-0 in the West Coach Conference. Saint Mary's won the only previous game against the Spartans, a 1-0 decision last year at the Saint Mary's Fall Classic.

TCU (6-7-1, 1-2-0 WAC) also has won the only previous meeting, a 4-1 win last year. Julie Brum scored San Jose State's goal.

The Spartans hold a 2-0 lead in the all-time series against SMU (10-3-0, 3-0-0 WAC). Both victories - in 1999 and 1998 - were by 1-0 scores. The 1998 victory was in the first round of the WAC playoffs. Molly Cowell scored the game-winning goal in last year's game, with assists to Brum and Rosie Madera. Brum had the only goal in the 1998 game, assisted by Madera.

Last week: The Spartans won one and lost one in a pair of conference home games last week.

San Jose State defeated UTEP, 2-1, on Friday. Jeane Sunseri and Jolene Keel scored the Spartan goals. Keel received the assist on Sunseri's goal, while Jackie Ostdiek and Kristyn Mescher were credited with assists on Keel's score.

On Sunday, the Spartans dropped a 1-0 decision to Tulsa. San Jose State lost despite taking 15 shots to Tulsa's 7, which included an 11-3 advantage in the second half.

Conference playoff picture: With three conference games left on its schedule, the Spartans are all but guaranteed a berth in the upcoming Western Athletic Conference playoffs. The top six teams in the eight-team conference advantage to the playoffs, which will be held at Fresno State Nov. 2-5. San Jose State is in third place in the standings, with a 2-1-1 record.

Jennifer Mescher is tied for fourth in assists, with 4. She is ninth in assists per game with a 0.27 average...Brandy Apodaca is tied for 10th in scoring with 11 points (four goals and three assists). She is ninth in assists...Karli Silveira is tied for fifth in game-winning goals, with 2.

Eryn Meyer is eighth in saves with 38 and is tied with SJSU's Trisha Forni for seventh in shutouts, each with 1.1 (one solo and one combined shutout). Meyer is also seventh in seventh in Goals Against Average, at 1.32. Forni is ninth in shutouts per game, with a 0.18 average, and is 10th in saves per game, at 3.50 (21 in six games).

Interim Head Coach Tamie Grimes: Tamie Grimes is in her first year as interim head coach at San Jose State. She was a Spartan assistant coach the past two years, including one year as a graduate assistant.
