Denver, Colo. - San Jose State University forward Jessica Scott was named the Western Athletic Conference Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week of October 1-7.
Scott, a junior from San Ramon, Calif. (California HS), provided her second two-goal game of the season and third multi-goal game of her career to lead San Jose State to its second victory of 2007, 2-1, over UC Irvine at home inside Spartan Stadium on Sunday, October 7. The Spartans battled a player short for over 82 minutes due to an early red card, with Scott breaking the scoreless deadlock at 84:49. She took a headed through ball by senior teammate Nicole Irwin after a long punt by goalkeeper Nina Butera and chipped her shot over the head of the oncoming Anteater goalie and into the goal. Scott then added what proved to be her second game-winning goal of the year at 87:27, this time taking a pass down the left wing from Tasha Van Dixhorn, touching the ball past the UCI goalie and slotting the ball into the empty net. She finished with a team-high seven shots, with three of them on goal.
In San Jose State's other game in the past week, Scott took a game-high nine shots, which included three on goal and one that hit the post in the second half, in a narrow 1-0 home loss to Saint Mary's on Friday, October 5.
Leading the team in shots taken for the third straight year since arriving at San Jose State, she is second already on the all-time school chart, with 157 for her career and 35 over her past five contests. Her team-leading season goal total is now at four in eight games, all starts. She also leads the team in total points while pacing the entire conference in shots.
This is the first weekly conference honor for a Spartan women’s soccer player in 2007, and the second time that Scott has earned the distinction in her career. Earlier this year, she was named to the 2007 Idaho State Classic All-Tournament Team after scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday, September 23.
Nevada defender Whitney Gilson was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week.
San Jose State opens the WAC portion of its 2007 schedule at rival Fresno State this Friday, October 12, before returning to Spartan Stadium to host Nevada at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 14. That match will serve as the second half of a San Jose State soccer doubleheader, with the Spartan men taking on UNLV beginning at 1:00 p.m.
