SAN JOSE, Calif. - Tulsa's Melissa McCormick scored at the 13:22 mark as the Golden Hurricane made it stand in a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over San Jose State University Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
McCormick scored from about 20 yards out from the middle of the field. Her shot went into the left corner of the net. Beth Taruscio and Kelly Noonan received assists on the play.
San Jose State outshot the Golden Hurricane 15-7, including 11-3 in the second half. Three Spartan shots went off the bar. Another opportunity went awry when SJSU was not able to control a crossing pass in front of the goal and ball ended up going out of bounds.
"When you double people's total shots you should be able to win games," commented San Jose State interim head coach Tamie Grimes. "A little unlucky today. They got the bounces and we didn't.
"I thought we completely dominated the second half, but you've got to play 90 minutes particularly in the WAC," Grimes said.
San Jose State slipped to 2-1-1 in conference games, 6-8-1 overall. Tulsa now stands at 2-2-0 in the WAC, 7-5-1 on the season.
San Jose State is at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. Tuesday for a non-conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
