Boise State rallies for 2-1 overtime win against San Jose State

Boise, Idaho - The San Jose State women’s soccer team nearly recorded its first win of the season at Boise State, but an own goal in overtime led to the Spartans’ 2-1 loss to the Broncos Friday afternoon at the Boas Tennis & Soccer Complex. The match was the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

After playing to a scoreless draw at the intermission, San Jose State came out fast in the second half, scoring in the 48th minute. After the Boise State defense failed to clear a loose ball out of its 18-yard box, Spartan Andrea Puljiz corralled the ball 17 yards out and fired a hard strike that sailed past the Broncos’ goalkeeper, Michaela Morrison, and just inside the right post for a quick 1-0 San Jose State lead at the 47:47 mark.

Boise State wasted no time in counterattacking in an attempt to close the gap. The Broncos' Sophie Parrish fired a shot at the 48:30 mark that Spartan keeper Adrienne Herbst saved by touching the ball wide right.

San Jose State nearly extended the lead in the 60th minute when Jessica Scott launched a shot from the high right wing. Morrison denied the shot to kept the Broncos in the match.

The Spartans had another opportunity to stretch the lead in the 64th minute when Cristin Murphy shot from about 17 yards out down the center. The shot beat the Bronco keeper only to see defender Julie Allen clear the ball of the goal line. The clearance was rebounded by Spartan Jennifer Guadagnolo who volleyed it back at goal where Morrison had recovered to deny the score.

Two minutes later Boise State drew even in the 66th minute. The Broncos drove down the right flank where San Jose State committed a foul giving Boise State a free kick from about 30 yards out. The Broncos’ Nicole Coleman took the kick sending it high towards the far post. The ball sailed over the outstretched hands of the keeper and past one defender straight to Boise State’s Melanie Bohnet who skied for the header sending it just inside the left post for the equalizer with 24 minutes to go.

The Broncos had several chances to end the match in regulation with two corner kicks and a Molly McDonald shot on goal in the final minute but failed to beat Herbst in goal.

To open the overtime period, the Broncos nearly ended the match themselves 20 seconds into extra time when Kristin Hall fired a rocket beating Herbst to the right only to see the ball strike the right post. The ball deflected back towards the center of the Spartan 18-yard box where it fell to the right foot of Boise State’s Randi Baker who had an open goal but touched it wide left of goal.

San Jose State had their chance and nearly won the match on a header by Kristin Krale at the 91:06 mark only to see it blocked by the Broncos’ Meredith Mangum.

The final and decisive strike came at the unfortunate hands of Spartan Amanda Villa. As the Broncos broke down field driving towards the San Jose State box, Villa out raced a Boise State attacker as the ball crossed into the 18-yard box. Villa’s sliding attempt to clear the ball from 17 yards out sailed past the Spartan keeper and into the right side of her own goal. The San Jose State own goal gave the Broncos the 2-1 victory in the 93rd minute.

On the day the match was tightly contested. The Spartans had the edge in shots on goal by a nine-to-six margin. Corner kicks were even at four apiece while fouls went heavily against San Jose State 17-to-8. Boise State’s goalkeeping tandem of Kim Parker (3) and Michaela Morrison (3) combined for six saves along with two by their teammates for a total of eight compared to four for Herbst.

The win improves Boise State to 7-4-2 overall and 1-0-0 in WAC action, while San Jose State remains winless on the season at 0-10-2 and moves to 0-1-0 in league. San Jose State returns home this Sunday and hosts Idaho at 1 p.m. The Vandals play at Hawaii late Friday night.
