Women's Soccer Opens WAC Play

San Jose, Calif. - After dropping a tough, 0-1, overtime match at Saint Mary's last Friday, the Spartan women's soccer team opens WAC play this weekend with a pair of matches.

On Friday, October 10, the Spartans welcome Fresno State (4-7-1) to Spartan Soccer Field in a 3:00 p.m. kickoff.

Last week the Bulldogs were on the road. On Friday they were in Corvallis, Ore. and tied Oregon State, 1-1. On Sunday, they traveled up Interstate 5 to Portland and defeated Portland State, 1-0.

Fresno State’s defense is led by the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, Kaitlyn Revel. Revel carries a 1.44 GAA into the match. She has allowed 17 goals on 72 shots overall. Last week, she allowed one goal on 13 shots as she played every minute of the two matches and improved her record to 4-6-1 on the season.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are led by Molly Nizzoli’s nine points. She has scored four goals and assisted on one other. Of her 25 shots taken, 14 have reached the net minder. Nicole Gutierrez has collected four goals for eight points. She has attempted 37 shots, 19 of which have been on-goal.

Fresno State leads the all-time series, 10-4-1, and defeated the Spartans in 2007, 1-0, in Fresno. The match is the WAC opener for both sides.

On Sunday, October 12, the Spartans hit the road for more WAC action as they face the Nevada Wolf Pack (0-9-2) in Reno, Nev. The kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Last week, the Wolf Pack traveled to Sacramento State on Thursday and dropped a 0-2 decision. On Sunday they hosted Saint Mary’s and lost a heart-breaker, 2-1, in the 106th minute.

The Wolf Pack offense is led by Samantha Miller’s six points. She has two goals and two assists on 21 shots overall, nine of which reached the opposing keeper. Erin Smith has also tallied two goals for four points on just eight shots.

Between the pipes, Sarah Hunt has a 0-7-2 record including two shutouts. She carries a 2.11 GAA and has allowed 21 goals on 67 shots.

The Spartans lead the all-time series, 4-2-1, and won the last match, 2-1, on October 14, 2007 on Spartan Soccer Field.
