SAN JOSE - San Jose State University took a 2-0 lead and made it stand in a 2-1 Western Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over UTEP Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
Spartan forwards Jeane Sunseri and Jolene Keel each scored a goal as the Spartans improved to 2-0-1 in the WAC, 6-7-1 overall. UTEP dropped to 0-3-0 in conference games, 4-8-0 on the season.
"I've got to give our girls credit for finding a way to win," commented SJSU interim head coach Tamie Grimes. "That was not a pretty game nor an easy game to win."
Sunseri gave the Spartans a 1-0 when she took a pass from Keel and put the ball into the upper left corner from about five yards out. The goal, at the 29:28 mark, was Sunseri's second of the season and Keel recorded her second assist of the year.
San Jose State made it 2-0 in the 75th minute when Keel turned and put a shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Assists were credited to Jackie Ostdiek and Kristyn Mescher.
"A great goal by Jolene," Grimes said. "It was a really nice turn and a great finish." The goal was the third this season for Keel. Ostdiek has two assists this season and Mescher one.
Grimes said the victory was important in the Spartans' quest for a conference playoff berth. "I told the girls before this weekend that we could sew up a spot in the conference playoffs," she said. The top six teams in the conference standings advance to the playoffs. San Jose State is in third place in the standings.
The Spartans return to action Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. conference game against Tulsa at Spartan Stadium.
