Women's Soccer Shut Out by UTEP

San Jose-An own goal and a goal by Jami Tulluis gave UTEP a 2-0 victory over the San Jose State women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field in a Western Athletic Conference match.

Neither team scored in the first half with UTEP outshooting the Spartans 9-4. The first goal of the game was scored in the first five minutes of the second half. Miner Christine McCartney shot the ball from the side of the net that went high and a Spartan defender knocked the ball into the net.

UTEP added a second goal at 61:13 when Jami Tulluis took a pass from McCartney and shot from the top of the box past Spartan goalie Adrienne Herbst. Tullius scored for the seventh time this season.

The Spartans surged in the last 10 minutes of the game, putting five shots on goal that were stopped by UTEP goalie Brittany Popoff. She ended the match with 11 saves, while Herbst stopped nine UTEP shots on goal.

San Jose State falls to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the WAC, while UTEP is now 8-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the WAC. The Spartans travel to Nevada Friday night for a 6 p.m. match. The team then plays at Boise State next Sunday at 12 noon.
