Santacruz Scores Twice In OT Win

September 30, 2010

Fresno, Calif.----Freshman Kayla Santacruz scored twice in overtime win at Fresno State, 2-1.  This marked the first time the Spartans beat the ‘Dogs at home in Bulldog Stadium, previously going 0-5-1.  San Jose State improves on their five-game unbeaten streak to 6-5 and Fresno State falls to 4-5-1.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald saw some action early, blocking a shot at 14 seconds from senior Claudia Cardenas.  San Jose State retaliated with four shots in ten minutes, two of which were on target.  The Spartans outshot the Bulldogs 6-3 in the first-half.

The first goal of the night came from Bulldogs' Nicole Duff at the 62:35 mark.  Senior Claudia Cardenas had her shot denied by the post, but the ball ricocheted in Duff's favor, who then took the ball and knocked it past Spartan goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald for the goal.  Ten minutes later, San Jose State found the equalizer when Sophomore Kelsey Lord played the ball to Santacruz, who broke free and slipped the ball into the back of the net.

The Spartans were outshot 7-4 in the second-half, but took their momentum into overtime.   In the 95th minute, the Spartans were able to close the game when Lord dribbled the ball past a couple defenders and buried a shot from an angle at 18 yards.  Santacruz redirected the shot into the far post for her third goal of the season.

"Overall we played hard, but not great.  Fresno State played very well and disrupted our flow," stated head coach Jeff Leightman.  "They forced us to change our system.  Once they scored, we had a sense of urgency and I was very pleased with their response.  We found a way to win on the road against a quality opponent.  We are maturing as a team as we go through the season and that's what really counts."

Maiwald finished the night with four saves and improved her record to above .500 at 6-5.

The Spartans return to Spartan Stadium next week, hosting Hawai'i at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 8.
