Women's soccer edged at UC Irvine on early goal, 1-0

Irvine, Calif. - UC Irvine scored a fifth-minute goal and held on to defeat San Jose State University, 1-0, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Anteater Stadium on Sunday, October 1.

The loss drops the Spartans to 3-7-1 on the year, while the host Anteaters improve to 3-7.

The lone goal of the contest was tallied by Lauryn Birkinshaw of UC Irvine, her first of the season. Frankee Kelly was credited with the assist. At the 4:23 mark, Kelly, a junior, found Birkinshaw, a senior, down the right side of the field, with Birkinshaw shooting past Spartan goalkeeper Kelsea Scott.

Scott, a redshirt freshman, played the full 90 minutes in goal for SJSU, making one save. Her counterpart in the Anteater net, Erin Henry, stopped three shots in earning the shutout. It was the sophomore’s second clean sheet of 2006.

UC Irvine out-shot San Jose State on the afternoon, 9-6, although the Spartans had three shots on goal to just two by the Anteaters. Jessica Scott, a sophomore forward, led the Spartans with three shots in the game. Roxy Kamal, a freshman out of nearby Presentation High School, was credited with the first shot of her collegiate career off the bench.

Birkinshaw matched Scott with three shots for UCI, including both shots on goal for the home side. The game featured just one corner kick between the teams, taken by UC Irvine in the first half.

San Jose State concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with its annual “Rivalry Series” match-up with South Bay rival Santa Clara University this Wednesday night, October 4. Kick-off at Santa Clara’s Buck Shaw Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m. The Broncos are currently ranked third in the nation.
