SPARKS, Nev. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team tied a school record for number of goals scored in a game in an 8-1 victory over the University of Nevada Sunday.
The Spartans tied a record set on Sept. 14, 1995 in an 8-0 win over Azusa Pacific. San Jose State improved to 5-7-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the WAC. Nevada is now 2-8 on the season, 0-2 in the WAC.
After spotting the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead, the Spartans scored three goals to end the first half and scored five times in the final 45 minutes. One of the second half goals was an "own" goal, scored by the Nevada goalkeeper into her own goal.
Jeane Sunseri scored the first Spartan goal. Karli Silveira gave San Jose State the lead for good, scoring back-to-back goals three minutes apart in the first half. Sunseri assisted on Silveira's first goal.
Cynthia Harrah put the Spartans up 4-1, with an assist to Brandy Apodaca. Following the "own" goal, Jackie Ostdiek, Julie Brum and Jennifer Mescher each added a goal to complete the scoring. Brum's goal was assisted by Mariko Yoshihara, while Silveira received the assist on Mescher's goal.
The Spartans return home Friday, Oct. 6, for a Western Athletic Conference game against UTEP. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will also be broadcast live on KSJS, 90.5 FM.
