Five second-half goals gives UTEP 6-1 women's soccer win

El Paso, Texas-----Christine McCartney, one of the top goal scorers in the Western Athletic Conference, scored two of her three goals in the second half as the University of Texas El Paso defeated San Jose State University, 6-1, in a Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer match.

McCartney, who has 10 goals on the season, accounted for two of the Miners’ five second-half scores to break a 1-1 halftime tie. She opened the game’s scoring at 23:43 on a penalty kick following a yellow card that was issued to Spartan goalkeeper Erin Lavey. Her second goal, the eventual game-winner, came at 46:43 off an assist from Amber Mack.

Kate Stevens added a goal and two assists for UTEP (7-3, 2-0 WAC).

Mariana Mesa scored San Jose State’s only goal at 37:58 with assists from Andrea Puljiz and Cori Borja.

Lavey had a busy day in the Spartan net making eight saves. UTEP outshot San Jose State (1-9, 0-2 WAC), 24-9.
