Spartans Blank Gaels, 1-0

September 26, 2010

San Jose, Calif.----San Jose State kept Saint Mary's College scoreless in a 1-0 victory on Sunday night, September 26.  In a shooting frenzy, the Spartans' game-winning goal came in the 80th minute, and came off the foot of Sophomore Kelsey Lord.  The Saint Mary's women's soccer team lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, falling to 6-3-2, while San Jose State reaches .500, improving to 5-5.

San Jose State controlled the action most of the game, and outshot the Gaels 21-10, including 6-1 in the first-half. The Spartans put 10 of their 21 shots on goal.  The goal came at the 79:12 mark and on the 20th shot by the Spartans.  Lord dribbled the ball through the box after the ball was blocked by a Gael and punted it through in the left corner, five yards out.  Lord's team-leading fifth goal of the season was unassisted.

"A lot of hard work went into this victory and it was definitely worth it," stated Kelsey Lord on her performance.  "We knew we needed to pickup our play in the second-half and we worked together as a team.  It was a great way to win."

Saint Mary's pressured the SJSU goal and tried to get the equalizer in the final four minutes, getting a pair of shots, one on goal, by sophomore Daelyn Paul, to go along with a couple corner kicks.   Spartan goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald launched through the air, making a fabulous save with three minutes left, robbing the Gaels of the equalizer.  The Spartans controlled possession and shots in the game holding a 21-10 advantage, with fifteen coming in the second.

"I was pleased with the results tonight," stated head coach Jeff Leightman.  "It was a quality win against a quality opponent.  We came out in the second-half with attitude and more of a dynamic attitude, which showed on the field."

Maiwald made five saves for the day and Saint Mary's goalkeeper Sarah Peters made eight.

The SJSU win ends a two-game winning streak for Saint Mary's in the series, and marks the third victory in the series for the Spartans (8-3-0).

San Jose State (5-5) begins WAC play on Thursday, September 30 with a 7:00 p.m. match against Fresno State (4-5-1) at Fresno State.
