Dallas, Texas—San Jose State opened Western Athletic Conference play at SMU Friday evening and lost to the defending conference champions 4-0 at Westcott Field.

SMU outshot the Spartans 19-8, and started the scoring early as Mustang Kim Harvey scored two goals in the first 25 minutes of the match. Jennifer Martin finished the SMU scoring in the first half with a goal at 32:06 off an SJSU defender deflection. Olivia O’Rear finished the scoring with an unassisted goal at 69:25

Of the Spartans eight shots, six were on goal. Shannon Leslie led the team with three shots, all on goal.

"We came out in the second half more prepared for the match," said interim head coach Cris Gilmore. "We played back on our heels in the first half and give our opponents too much respect to begin the match."

With the loss, San Jose State falls to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the WAC. SMU improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC. The Spartans will next play at UTEP Sunday afternoon.
