Women's Soccer Defeats Air Force, 3-1

Colorado Springs, Colo. - After nearly an hour-and-a-half delay due to lightning and another 30-minute delay after an injury to the opponent's goalie, the San Jose State women’s soccer team earned its second win of the year, defeating the Falcons of the United States Air Force Academy, 3-1. The win boosts the Spartans' record to 2-4-3, while the Falcons fell to 3-7-0.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when sophomore midfielder Katie Bonadies netted the first goal of her career.  Her shot came from the top of the left side of the box and went past the Falcon keeper into the right side of the net.  Freshman forward Michelle Haughey was credited with the assist, her collegiate scoring debut as well.

Two minutes and 30 seconds later, the Falcons' Bridgett Murphy scored the equalizer unassisted on a shot from 25 yards out.

The Spartans wasted no time in the second half re-establishing the lead.  At the 47:59 mark, junior Emmy Belding blasted her team-leading third goal of the year from point blank range to push the Spartans back ahead, 2-1.  Senior co-captain Jennifer Guadagnolo assisted and earned her first point of the year.

San Jose State kept the pressure on and in the 68th minute Kaila Waitley reached pay dirt off a corner kick to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish.  Sophomore Brittany Boehm assisted on the goal. The points were the first for both athletes this year.

The Spartan offense took 14 shots, led by Bonadies (2 shots, 2 on-goal, 1 goal), Boehm (2 shots, 2 on-goal, 1 assist), Belding (2 shots, 1 on-goal, 1 goal, game winner), Haughey (2 shots, 1 on-goal, 1 assist), Waitley (1 shots, 1 on-goal, 1 goal), and Roxy Kamal (2 shots).  Others contributing were Guadagnolo (1 assist), Lauren Sanchez (1 shot, 1 on-goal), Jessica Ingram (1 shot) and Shanelle Furner (1 shot).

In net, sophomore Nina Butera improved her record to 1-0-1, allowing one goal and making two saves.  The match was the second consecutive start and her second of the year.

The three goals are the most for the Spartans since a 3-3 tie against USF on Sept. 2, 2007.

The Spartans' road trip continues on Sunday, Sept. 28, when they visit the Aztecs of San Diego State (3-4-1). Kick off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

The Aztecs are led by a pair of three-goal-scorers, Cat Walker and Jessica Gordon. The pair have each also collected an assist, good for seven points overall. Between the pipes, Aubree Southwick is 3-4. She has allowed 14 goals for a GAA of 1.80, and made 32 saves.
