Women's Soccer Begins WAC Season

This week: San Jose State University's women's soccer team begins the Western Athletic Conference portion of its schedule this week with a pair of road games.

The Spartans are at the University of Hawai'i on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. (HT) game. San Jose State then travels to Reno, Nev. for a Sunday game against the University of Nevada. That game begins at 1:00 p.m.

Spartan record: San Jose State is 4-7 overall, 0-0 in the WAC

About Hawai'i: Hawai'i is 2-7-1 overall, 0-0 in the WAC. After recording two wins and a tie in its first three games of the season, the Rainbow Wahine have lost seven straight.

About Nevada: Nevada is 2-7-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the WAC. The Wolfpack are the newest members of the conference. Nevada, which dropped its conference opener to Fresno State, 3-0, on Sept. 3., is currently on a four-game losing streak.

Last week: San Jose State dropped three games last week, all at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans lost to UC Irvine, 1-0, last Tuesday. On Friday, SJSU dropped a 4-0 decision to California in the first round of the adidas Bay Area Classic. The Spartans ended the week on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Stanford at the adidas Bay Area Classic.

Ostdiek, Madera named to all-tourney team: Jackie Ostdiek and Rosie Madera were named to the all-tournament team at the adidas Bay Area Classic. The team was selected in a vote of coaches, sports information personnel and tournament officials.

Conference statistics notes: Jennifer Mescher is tied for second in this week's WAC statistics with four assists. She is eighth in assists per game, at 0.36.

Brandy Apodaca is tied for fifth in goals scored, with four, and is tied for eighth in points, with nine.

Trisha Forni and Eryn Meyer are tied for seventh in shutouts, with 1.1 each. Myer is 10th in Goals Against Average, at 1.58, and is tied for eighth in saves, with 22. Forni is 10th in saves, with 21. Forni's saves per game average of 3.50 is ninth in the conference.

Spartan record book: Goalkeepers Trisha Forni and Eryn Meyer are tied for fourth in single season combined shutouts and second in career combined shutouts, with two apiece. They are also tied for fourth in single season solo shutouts and second in career solo shutouts with one each.

Jennifer Mescher, Brandy Apodaca and Rosie Madera are in a five-way tie for fourth in career game-winning goals, with four each.

Mescher and Julie Brum are among four Spartans tied for third in career assists, with 12.

Interim Head coach Tamie Grimes: Tamie Grimes is in her first year as the San Jose State head coach. She was an assistant coach for the Spartans the past two seasons.
