Women's Soccer Shuts Out Sacramento State

San Jose—Spartan goalie Adrienne Herbst recorded her first career shutout and three different players scored as the San Jose State women’s soccer team defeated Sacramento State, 3-0, Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Spartan Soccer Field.

Herbst made six saves in the Spartan win and faced 10 shots from the Hornets. The shutout was the first in two years for San Jose State. The last opponent SJSU shut out was at UC Riverside, a 3-0 win on September 2, 2002. The last home Spartan shut out came during the 2001 season when the team defeated Tulsa, 2-0, on October 5.

Kirstin Tanaka entered the match in the first half and scored the Spartans’ first goal at 42:15. She scored from the right side of the box from 20 yards out.

The next San Jose State goals came within six minutes of each other in the second half. Christina Morrison took a Vanessa Afonso cross and knocked the ball into the goal at 77:58. Jackie Zabek scored at 83:55 on a header from the left side off a Cori Borja pass.

The Spartans broke a four-match losing streak with the win. The team travels to USF on Sunday for a non-conference match at 1 p.m
