Women's soccer edged late at Pacific, 3-2

Stockton, Calif. - A goal by Carmen Padilla with just 1:29 remaining in regulation gave the University of the Pacific a 3-2 victory over San Jose State University in a non-conference game at Stagg Memorial Stadium on Friday, September 22.

Padilla, a senior midfielder and San Jose native out of Archbishop Mitty High School, beat a defender toward the goal-line and found the net for an unassisted goal, her first of the season, at 88:31 to settle the result.

San Jose State’s goals came from junior Kristin Krale and sophomore Jennifer Guadagnolo, both midfielders. Krale’s was her first of 2006, while Guadagnolo now shares the team lead with senior tri-captain Nicole Martinez and fellow sophomore Jessica Scott, at three goals apiece.

SPARTANS TAKE LEAD WITH HALF AN HOUR TO GO

Krale’s first-half goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute. Martinez stole a clearance attempt and crossed for Krale to volley home. Martinez’s assist was the first of her Spartan career. Guadagnolo’s header goal then put the Spartans ahead briefly, 2-1, in the 59th minute. Senior tri-captain Cynthia Pinkney picked up her second assist of 2006.

The host Tigers got back on level terms just over three minutes later at the 61:26 mark, as Mandi Van Dorn tallied her second goal of the game and fourth on the year. The goal came off a corner kick, with Suzy Peterson assisting. Van Dorn’s first goal had opened the scoring just 4:32 into the game, the junior forward shooting to the far post following a Laura King cross.

In goal, Marissa Dayton made eight saves over the 90 minutes, as did Jaime Souza in the Pacific net. The Tigers out shot the Spartans, 20-16, and had seven corner kicks to three.

The loss drops San Jose State to 3-5-1 overall on the year. Pacific continues its impressive start to the 2006 campaign with a 7-1-1 record.

San Jose State returns to Spartan Stadium for one final non-conference home match for the 2006 season, this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against UC Riverside.
