Women's Soccer: UC Irvine Tops Spartans

SAN JOSE - Lachelle Manzano scored with 1:44 left in the second half to give UC Irvine a 1-0 victory over San Jose State University Tuesday night in a non-conference women's soccer game at Spartan Stadium.

Manzano took a short pass from Janelle Doyle and put the ball into the left side of the net. Manzano had a clear shot at the net after Spartan goalkeeper Eryn Meyer had attempted to block Doyle's pass. The ball bounced over Meyer's outstretched hand to Manzano.

"That happens," said San Jose State head coach Tamie Grimes. "You have to really focus in the last five minutes and we didn't.

"We had those types of games with Cal Poly and Oregon State and won those," said Grimes. "I guess it was our turn to be on the other end."

Earlier this season, the Spartans defeated Cal Poly and Oregon State by identical 1-0 scores. Both of those games were also at Spartan Stadium.

San Jose State slipped to 4-5 overall with the loss. UC Irvine now stands at 5-1-1.

The Spartans' next game is Friday at 6:00 p.m., when San Jose State meets California in the first game of the adidas Bay Area Classic at Spartan Stadium.
