SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose State women's soccer team got into the win column Friday for the first time this season with a second-half goal from Lauren Sanchez, taking a 1-0 victory over visiting Portland State.
Gabriella Stange sent a through pass in the 70th minute from midfield to Kayla Santacruz on the right side. Santacruz took the ball all the way into the box and shot to the far post. The ball went wide and got past Vikings goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer, but Sanchez was in the right place at the right time to put it home for the 1-0 lead.
The goal was Sanchez's first of the season. The assist for Santacruz was also her first of 2011, getting her on the board in the points category. Stange notched her first career collegiate point by also chipping in on the score.
"I think the difference today was that we played as the aggressors," San Jose State head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We've been playing some great soccer, with a breakdown here and a breakdown there, but today we got the win."
The game was even for most of the first half, with both teams putting two shots on goal, but it was the Spartans who saw the most scoring chances in the first 45 minutes. Kelsey Lord nearly put San Jose State ahead in the first three minutes of the game with a shot from the top of the box that went high by mere inches.
The Vikings had a chance in the 68th minute when Amanda Dutra shot a low ball from near point-blank in the box, but the shot was right at Spartans' goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald. Maiwald finished the day with five saves and a clean sheet for her first shutout of the season. Hulsizer grabbed three saves.
"We played great soccer like we have been and we finally got the result," Sanchez said. "The defense did a great job."
With the win, the Spartans' stay undefeated all-time against Portland State, moving to 3-0. Sunday's game was the first matchup between the two teams since 2000.
The Spartans will play two games away from home next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. night game Friday at Pacific. The team then takes on St Mary's (Calif.) at noon Sept. 25.
