Women's Soccer Falls To USF

San Francisco, Calif. The San Jose State women’s soccer team fell behind 2-0 in the first half of their non-conference match against the University of San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium and battled back in the second half with a goal, but ultimately fell 2-1.  The loss leaves the Spartans 1-4-2, while the Dons improve to 4-3-1.

USF got on the board first.  In the 14th minute USF’s Lauren Abarca took a corner kick from the left side that Nicole Moore punched into the far corner to give the Don’s a 1-0 lead.  Just more than 90 seconds later Moore scored off another corner kick from Abarca and USF led 2-0.

The Spartans best opportunity of the first half came on a corner kick by freshman Shanelle Furner who placed the ball at the far post.  Stephanie Righetti’s header went just high.  The half ended with the Dons holding a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans came out with renewed energy in the second half and out shot the Dons 6-3.  While the Spartans had several opportunities in the second, they got on the board in the 80th minute.

Freshman Jessica Ingram, out of Santa Teresa High School in San Jose, took a free kick that was blocked by a San Francisco defender.  The deflection came to Shanell Furner, a freshman from San Carlos, Calif., who blasted it into upper right corner of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.  The goal cut the Don’s lead in half, 2-1 with just over 10 minutes to play.

The Spartans fought for the equalizer, but came up on the short end of a 2-1 score.

The Spartans were led by Furner who tallied three shots, two on goal and the score and Emmy Belding who had three shots.  Ingram’s assist was her first of the season and her career.  Stephanie Righetti got two shots and Jennifer Guadagnolo had one shot, on goal.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday, September 21, when they host the RedHawks of Miami University at Spartan Stadium.  Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
