Flagstaff, Ariz. - A goal from the penalty spot with just over 17 and a half minutes remaining was the difference as San Jose State University lost to Southern Utah University, 1-0, in a neutral-site non-conference match at Northern Arizona University’s Lumberjack Stadium on Sunday, September 16.
With the defeat, San Jose State drops to 0-3-2 on the season. Southern Utah, a member of the Summit League, improves to 1-2-2 overall with its first win of the 2007 campaign. It was the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Sophomore midfielder Laura Goodrich converted the Southern Utah penalty kick at 72:25 for her second goal of the season and just the second SUU score on the year. It snapped redshirt freshman goalkeeper Nina Butera’s streak of consecutive shutout minutes at 162:32 to begin her Spartan career.
The game’s first shot was credited at 3:21 to Southern Utah forward Catherine Johnson, a senior co-captain, with Butera making the save. The first San Jose State shot then came from junior forward Liz Behlen in the sixth minute, and was saved by senior Thunderbird goalie Holly Senter.
Southern Utah out-shot San Jose State for the first half, 8-6, a total which included an attempt that glanced off the crossbar by sophomore Jennifer Johnson in the 40th minute. A second shot by senior Spartan midfielder Nicole Irwin then generated a second save in the period by Senter.
The game’s first corner kick was won by San Jose State at the 70:41 mark, with the lone goal coming moments later. The Spartans took the final three shots of the match, with efforts by senior tri-captain Jackie Zabek, junior Amanda Villa and redshirt freshman Brittany Boehm all being denied by Senter. Boehm’s was the first of her college career.
Irwin and Villa had two shots apiece for the Spartans, while Catherine Johnson provided a game-high four shots for SUU. The Thunderbirds held a 14-10 shot advantage on the afternoon.
Butera, a redshirt freshman out of San Jose’s Presentation High School, made her first collegiate start in goal in the absence of redshirt sophomore Marissa Dayton after replacing Dayton in the 20th minute in her debut against Northern Arizona on Friday night. She finished Sunday’s game with a pair of saves.
Senter wound up with six stops and her first individual shutout of 2007 for Southern Utah.
Erica Ng-Pinkerton, a fourth-year senior out of San Jose’s Santa Teresa High School, earned her first start since her freshman season in 2004 and second of her college career as an outside midfielder.
