San Jose, Calif.----- With two first-half goals, both in the first 20 minutes, the San Jose State women's soccer team cruised to a win, posting a 3-0 victory over visiting UC Riverside, Sunday, September 12.
Two midfielders, Junior Shanelle Furner and freshman Alex Jimenez got things started for the Spartans in the 14:39 mark. Furner, who was running in towards the goal, slid in behind several Riverside defenders to one-time it past goalkeeper Jessica White. Jimenez, who crossed the ball to the far side of the box where Furner was positioned, was credited with the assist.
"After scoring that goal, I feel much more confident and I want to find more opportunities to shoot in the future, " Furner stated after scoring her first goal of the season. "A win like this is important to our team, especially heading into two matches on the road."
Four minutes later, Lauren Sanchez knocked one in. Sanchez took a shot from 20 yards out at the 18:28 mark which flew over White's hands and landed in the far side of the net.
The Highlanders had six corner kicks in the first half, but were unable to capitalize. They finished the first half with four shots.
The final goal of the game came off the foot of Jessica Ingram in the 73:34 mark. Ingram bounced one through, 20 yards out, which somehow fell through and found the back of the net. Ingram was credited with her first goal of the season.
San Jose State (2-5) will face Eastern Michigan (3-3-1) at the Wolf Pack Invitational, Thursday, September 16. This will be the first time these two teams have met. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Reno, Nevada.
