Women's Soccer Overwhelms Howard, 8-0

Washington, D.C. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team (2-4) completed a perfect weekend on the East Coast by pummeling Howard University, 8-0, at Greene Stadium on Sunday afternoon, September 13.

The result matched program records both for goals in a single game, and margin of victory. The Spartans' 25 total points from eight goals and nine assists also eclipsed their previous standard. San Jose State, now 2-4, out-scored Lafayette and Howard, 12-1, over its first two victories of 2009 on Friday afternoon, September 11, and today. Howard remains winless at 0-5-1.

Senior striker Emmy Belding tallied three of the eight goals for her first major college hat trick. It was the eighth three-goal performance in program history, and first since 2006. Her opener at 7:48, with assists going to Amanda Martin and Roxy Kamal, went down as the game-winner.

Katie Knopp, a junior college All-American a year ago at Solano Community College, added the first two goals of her major college career, to cap the scoring in each four-goal half of play for the Spartans. She took a game-high six shots on the afternoon.

Laura Hill scored her first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute, while fellow freshman Kelsey Lord tallied her second and Kamal, a senior co-captain, also provided her second in as many games. Kamal assisted on each of the first three scores to fall one short of equaling the single-game school record. It was the first three-assist performance by a Spartan this decade. Lord helped on two of the goals after halftime for her first college assists, as the duo turned in the first multiple-assist efforts by a San Jose State player since 2006.

Shannon Righetti, a freshman San Jose product out of Pioneer High School, was credited with her first collegiate assist on Hill's goal in the 72nd minute. Junior co-captain Katie Bonadies and sophomore Shanelle Furner collected their first collegiate assists in the match as well.

Nina Butera and Danielle Anderson each saw a half of action in the net as the Spartans registered their first shutout of 2009. The junior goalies were called upon for one save apiece.

The Spartans out-shot their fourth straight opponent, 35-7, with 22 attempts coming after halftime. In addition to Knopp's six, Lord had a season-high five shots. Belding and Kamal took four shots apiece, all on goal.

Chanel Bell made 12 saves in the Howard goal. Jordan Brown had a team-high three shots.

Having now concluded a season-long four-game road stretch, all against East Coast foes, with an even 2-2 mark, San Jose State returns home late Monday night, September 14, and next hosts UC Davis on Friday, September 18. Kick-off inside Spartan Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
