BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- McColl Matthews scored her first collegiate goal and Kelsey Lord notched her second of the season to give the Spartans a 2-1 halftime lead, but host CSU Bakersfield got three unanswered second half scores to defeat the San Jose State women's soccer team, 4-2.
Matthews used her head in the 33rd minute to tally the first points of her career for the Spartans (0-6). Lord sent a cross over to Matthews after a connecting pass from Amanda Martin, and Matthews' header tied the score at 1-1. CSU Bakersfield (2-3) had taken a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute with a goal off a corner kick.
Lord then buried a goal of her own, her second of the year, in the top right corner of the goal from 25 yards out to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead that they would take into halftime.
The Roadrunners took over in the second half, starting in the 54th minute with an unassisted goal from Sam Pena, her first of two on the night, to tie the score at 2-2. Pena then scored again in the 61st minute off an assist from Emily Noethe, giving CSUB a 3-2 lead. The final strike came in the 77th minute when Kassi Massey got a penalty kick opportunity thanks to a foul in the box by the Spartans. San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald saved Massey's initial attempt, but Massey was able to put in the rebound, putting the Roadrunners up, 4-2.
"It's all about opportunities. We're just not bringing the right mentality to the game," San Jose State women's soccer head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We need to get some players back healthy."
Maiwald finished with a season-high 12 saves as the Roadrunners held a 100 percent shot-on-goal percentage. CSU Bakersfield 'keeper Kym Gause made one save on the night. A total of six yellow cards were issued and 22 fouls were called in what was a physical contest between the two teams. The victory was CSU Bakersfield's first-ever against the Spartans in four all-time meetings.
San Jose State will play at Sacramento State at 4:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, before returning home for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff Sunday, Sept. 18, against Portland State in Spartan Stadium.
