San Diego, Calif.-----Coming off a victory against Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, September 5, the much-improved San Jose State Spartans fell short at San Diego State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon, September 10. The Aztecs opened the scoring at the 10.38 mark when a pair of freshmen, Haley Palmer and Carli Johnson, met outside the box. Palmer fed Johnson the ball and headed it in from 7 yards out. San Diego State tallied two shots before the score, but both went wide.
San Jose State battled back and got the equalizer at the 37:12 mark. The only tally for the Spartans came off a header from junior Amanda Martin, off the corner, inside the near post. Megan Molina was credited with her first collegiate-career assist, as the freshman posted the ball to Martin from close range. The goal was Martin's first of the season.
The Aztecs took the lead in the 68th minute when senior Britney Bennett knocked one into the upper right side of the goal for the eventual game winner. The assist went to senior Michaela DeJesus.
San Jose State fought back and nearly tied the game at the 83:10 mark. A substitution in the 78th minute called for freshman Alex Jimenez who has seen playing time in every game this season. Jimenez lined up near the right-side of the box and powered one towards the goal. The ball narrowly missing the net, bounced off the cross-bar.
"We did a lot of good things today. The game went back-and-forth and unfortunately we came up short," head coach Jeff Leightman stated on the overall play. "There was good attacking on both teams. I don't think the shots were indicative of the game. Our players (SJSU) had a good flow and attacking matter today. We will continue to stay positive and good things will happen."
The loss leaves the Spartans record at (1-5), while the Aztecs improve to (2-3-2). The Spartans make their way back home to host UC Riverside (1-3), Sunday, September 12. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
