Riverside, Calif. - The San Jose State University women’s soccer team lost to UC Riverside, 4-0, on Sunday at UCR Soccer Stadium.
The loss leaves the Spartans at 0-3-2 overall, while UC Riverside improves to 4-2-0.
The Highlanders tallied three goals in just over a five-minute stretch of the first half. They opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Heidi Garrett scored the first of two goals on the day. Tessa Lennala was credited with an assist.
Just over two minutes later, Garrett struck again with assists going to Ashley Parks and Letty Villalpando. Villalpando tallied the third goal, unassisted, at the 24:06 mark.
The Spartans' best scoring opportunity of the half came in the 36th minute on a shot off the foot of sophomore Katie Bonadies, which deflected off the crossbar.
In the 65th minute Kristina Kelly got the Highlanders' final goal with an assist from Taryn Bales to make the score 4-0.
Emmy Belding and Kelsy Holm, each of whom took one shot, on goal, led the Spartans offensively. Junior Roxy Kamal had two shots. Shanelle Furner, Lauren Moniz, Stephanie Righetti, Michelle Haughey, Lauren Sanchez and Katie Bonadies all took one shot.
“In stretches we improved,” said head coach Jeff Leightman. “We possessed the ball and controlled the play, but our back line broke down and we gifted UC Riverside three goals in the first half.”
“We can’t play this way and expect to win. Riverside is a good team, but we shot ourselves in the foot today and it cost us the match,” Leightman added.
