SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Senior Shanelle Furner collected her first points of the season Sunday at Spartan Stadium with a first-half goal and second-half assist as the San Jose State women's soccer team was defeated, 5-2, by visiting UC Davis.
Furner's first goal of 2011 came left-footed in the 40th minute. As the Aggies (3-1) tried to clear the ball away from their goal, Furner collected it about 20 yards out, turned and fired with her left foot into a wide-open left side to cut UC Davis' lead to 2-1.
Furner would later assist on a second goal for the Spartans (0-5) to total three points on the night. The senior placed a ball right at the feet of teammate Kelsy Holm eight yards in front of the goal during the 84th minute. Aggies goalkeeper Taylor Jern, who had entered only moments before, came charging to grab the ball but missed, leaving a wide-open net for Holm to put the ball into. The goal was Holm's first of the year and again cut UC Davis' lead in half, this time at 4-2.
"Give credit to [UC] Davis, they came out to play today," said San Jose State women's soccer head coach Jeff Leightman. "We're going to go back and prepare better."
UC Davis opened up the scoring in the 21st minute on a give-and-go play between Allison Kelly and Lisa Kemp. Kelly passed the ball to Kemp while running through midfield, and she sent a through-pass right back at Kelly. Kelly had one defender and the goalkeeper to beat, and she did both, fighting off the Spartans' defender who was hanging off her right shoulder, and sending the ball low past San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald.
The Aggies upped their lead to 2-0 five minutes later on another through-pass connection, this time from Lexi Poppoff to Ashley Edwards, and took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
"At the beginning we were playing good, our momentum was there," said Furner. "Second half, I don't know what happened. They just wanted it more than we did."
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Aggies got a chance to extend their lead on a penalty kick when Kemp was pulled down inside the box. Kemp cashed it in to make the lead 3-1. UC Davis would strike again in the 51st minute after Poppoff sent a low cross through traffic in front of the goal. The ball was deflected by a diving Maiwald, but Elise Winbrock was able to gather it and score, pushing the Aggies' lead to 4-1.
The Spartans had a great scoring opportunity in the 60th minute when Kayla Santacruz sent a bouncing pass to Gabriella Stange inside the box. Stange overran it at first, but spun around 180 degrees and put a foot on the ball, but UC Davis goalkeeper Maria Magana was there to fall on it at the same moment, ending the threat.
Maiwald finished with four saves in 80 minutes of play time. UC Davis' Magana and Jern both finished the game without a save. Gladis Covarrubias played 10 minutes and did not record a save.
The Aggies' final strike came in the 86th minute against Covarrubias, who was seeing her first collegiate action after subbing in the 81st minute. Anna Quigly found a sprinting Taylor Duffner on the right side with another through-pass, and Duffner was able to finish past a diving Covarrubias to put her team up, 5-2.
San Jose State will travel to Cal State Bakersfield Friday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The next home game is Sunday, September 18, against Portland State.
