San Jose, Calif. ----- Kelsey Lord scored both goals on Sunday, helping the San Jose State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield. The Spartans improve to 1-4-0, while the Roadrunners fall to 1-3-1.
After managing an impressive five shots in the first half, the Spartans struck at the 23:32 mark of the first half on Lord's first goal of the afternoon. Lauren Sanchez provided the assist, allowing Lord to head the ball through.
"Offensively today we got a lot more opportunities than we usually do. We were able to use our team speed to split their defense and create more scoring chances," said San Jose State Kelsey Lord. "Getting the win today helped our confidence a lot, working together and playing for each other is going to be the key in the future."
Lord later punched one through, her second of the day, 10 yards out from the box. Katie Knopp was credited with the assist. The Roadrunners answered back at the 81:25 mark when Jessica Fogeltanz received the ball from a corner kick by Hannah Farazmand. Fogeltanz knocked it in, back right corner of the net.
After out-shooting CSU Bakersfield 5-3 in the first half, San Jose State ended up being out-shot 7-9 on the afternoon. Spartan goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald played the entire 90 minutes in goal, making 3 saves and allowing 1 goal.
The Spartans face the Aztecs of San Diego State on Friday, September 10. Kick-off at 11:00 a.m. at San Diego.
