Riverside, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team wrapped up a season-long four-game road stretch with a 2-1 loss at UC Riverside on Sunday, September 4.

Down 2-0, freshman Liz Behlen's goal at the 77:55 mark gave the Spartans some hope, but the Highlanders, in their 2005 home opener, were able to hold on for the final 12 minutes. Behlen picked up a loose ball in the opposing penalty box, eluded a pair of defenders and put a low shot into the right corner for her second collegiate goal. Late attempts on goal by Behlen and freshman Jessica Scott were unsuccessful.

UC Riverside got on the board just 2:37 into the game. Senior Renee Scachetti headed a cross from the right side which bounded off the crossbar, and headed it again, this time being denied by senior Spartan goalkeeper Adrienne Herbst. The ball rebounded a second time, with senior Vanessa Chanez finally heading it home for the 1-0 lead.

Scachetti later added the insurance goal at the 70:45 mark, from 25 yards out, to give her 18 goals for her career, first all-time at UCR. Freshman Sarah Mohammadi assisted.

Despite the result, the Spartans outshot the Highlanders, 10-9. Herbst had four saves in 90 minutes while junior Tawny Poggio stopped five shots in goal for UCR.

The loss leaves the Spartans winless at 0-5, while UC Riverside moves to 2-0-1 on the young season.

San Jose State returns home to begin a season-long four-game homestand, this coming Friday, September 9, as it hosts Cal Poly at 4:00 p.m. at Spartan Field.
