Spartans Look to Carry Momentum Into The Weekend

LAST TIME OUT:
In a physical match last Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field, the San José State University women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2014 season in a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State. Senior midfielder Kareli Rodriguez's beat the Sacramento State keeper for the game-winning goal in the 13th minute. 

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis' shutout was her of the season and the fourth of her career. Also, the victory of the Hornets marked the first at San José head coach Lauren Hanson. 

SCOUTING CAL POLY:
The Mustangs come into Friday's match with an overall record of 1-2-0. In its previous match, Cal Poly was defeated at home for the first time in 14 games to Florida Atlantic, 2-0. Midfielder Elise Krieghoff and defender Allie Bégin pace the Mustangs. The junior pair each own one goal to their names, while Krieghoff finished 5th in the country last season in both total points (45) and total goals (21), and is also third in career goals scored in Cal Poly history (33).


THE SERIES WITH THE MUSTANGS:
San José trails the all-time series against Cal Poly 8-2-0. The teams met last season in San Luis Obispo, as the Mustangs defeated San José 3-0.


The series has been a bit lopsided, as the Mustangs have defeated San José in its previous six meetings. The most recent Spartan victory came on August 8, 2000 when the San José defeated Cal Poly 3-0.

SCOUTING PACIFIC:
Pacific is led by senior Amalaya Cabrera and sophomore Alex Hussar, who lead the Tigers with one goal apiece, respectively. Pacific split its weekend matches defeating Quinnipiac 1-0 and then falling to Florida International in the following match on Knoles Soccer Field.

THE SERIES WITH THE TIGERS:
San José will be looking to make the series even when they travel to Stockton to face the Tigers, as Pacific leads the all-time series with San José State 8-7-0. The Spartans have closed the margin in the series by winning consecutive matches over the Tigers after dropping four in a row prior to the victory in 2012.  


In their last meeting, the San José State University women's soccer team scored a goal within the first two minutes of each half en route to its first win of the 2013 season, a 3-2 victory over Pacific. Kareli Rodriguez, Lupita Estrada and Cheryl Kute all found the net for the Spartans.

SPARTAN RANKINGS:
San José currently ranks second in both goals allowed (2) and goals against average (0.67) in the Mountain West, trailing only New Mexico who has yet to compete in a match this season.


Junior goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis sits sixth in the Mountain West in saves (11), while senior midfielder Kareli Rodriguez, with her game-winning goal in the Spartans 1-0 win over Sacramento State, sits eighth in goals scored (1).

THE Lauren Hanson ERA BEGINS:
On Sunday, August 31, 2014, Hanson earned her first victory as the head coach at San José with a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State at Spartan Soccer Field.

Hanson became the program's sixth head coach in December of 2013. A winner of NCAA Women's College Cup championships as a player (University of Portland, 2002) and an assistant coach (University of Portland, 2005), Hanson came to the Spartans from the University of Oregon where she was the associate head coach and the Ducks' recruiting coordinator.

ON DECK FOR THE SPARTANS:
San José will step away from Spartan Soccer Field next weekend, as the Spartans will travel to Santa Barbara to take on the Gauchos on Friday, September 12 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 14 at San Francisco to face the Dons at 12 p.m.
