Long Beach, Calif. – Long Beach State junior Elizabeth Romo produced the school's second-ever hat trick to help defeat visiting San Jose State, 4-0, in non-conference women’s soccer action at George Allen Field on Tuesday, August 30.

After Hayley Bolt scored at 4:41 off an assist from fellow freshman Julie Megorden, Romo tallied twice in less than three minutes, at 33:15 and 36:00, to give the home side a 3-0 halftime advantage. Bolt and freshman Dana Farquhar assisted on the two scores, respectively. Romo then completed her hat trick with an unassisted strike on a breakaway in the 75th minute.

Adrienne Herbst collected three saves for San Jose State in the first 45 minutes. Fellow senior Erin Lavey relieved her and made five stops following the break. Freshman starter Liz Ramos and Meghan Hartwyk, the lone senior on the roster, each saw 45 minutes of action in the 49er goal, with Ramos producing one save. Long Beach State outshot the visitors, 19-6.

Second-year head coach Dave Siracusa spoke post-game about the growing pains of his young Spartan squad, which at one point had nine freshmen and sophomores on the field in Long Beach.

"I thought we played well, even though the score doesn't show it," he noted. "I said at the start (of the season) that we are young and that we will make our fair share of mistakes, and that is what has been happening so far. We need to shore up those mistakes, identify and correct them. But I saw a lot of fight and some real promise out there."

The win evened Long Beach State’s record at 1-1. San Jose State, suffering its third consecutive loss to a Big West Conference opponent to open the 2005 season after a 2-1 home defeat to UC Irvine on August 26 and a 5-1 loss at Cal State Fullerton on August 28, fell to 0-3.

The Spartans are now midway through a season-long four-game road stretch. This Friday night, September 2, they travel up the freeway for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest at 14th-ranked Stanford. San Jose State returns to begin a season-long four-game homestand on Friday, September 9, hosting Cal Poly at 4:00 p.m. at Spartan Field.
