SAN JOSE (August 29) - San Jose State University senior Brandy Apodoca celebrated her 21st birthday in style Tuesday.
Apodaca scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute as the Spartans topped Cal Poly 1-0 in a non-conferene women's soccer game at Spartan Stadium.
"One of our goals is to win at home," said Apodaca, who took a pass from Jennifer Mescher on the left side of the field and scored from about 15 yards out. Erica Oatman also was credited with an assist on the play, which came at the 85:06 mark.
"Brandy always seems to score against Cal Poly," commented SJSU head coach Tamie Grimes, noting that Apodaca scored twice in San Jose State's win over the Mustangs last year.
San Jose State improved to 2-1 overall, while Cal Poly slipped to 0-2.
"I'm very happy with 2-1," said Grimes. "We need to win our home games.
"We played tough," said Grimes. "That was the important part."
Grimes said she was particularly happy with the play of starting defenders Jackie Ostdiek, Jackie Hernandez, Kristyn Mescher and Cynthia Harrah. "Our four in the back were solid," she said.
The Spartans return to action Thursday, when they host Sacramento State at 7:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
