Women's Soccer Earns 0-0 Tie At UC Davis

Davis, Calif. - The San Jose State University women’s soccer team and UC Davis played 110 minutes, in triple digit temperatures, without a goal being scored by either side, as the non-conference contest at Aggie Soccer Stadium ended as it began, 0-0, on Friday afternoon.

With the tie, San Jose State moves its record to 0-2-1 on the season. UC Davis is now 1-1-1 overall.

Junior Roxy Kamal got the first shot on goal in the 6th minute with sophomore Sarah Peters making the stop.  Peters then denied redshirt freshman forward Stephanie Righetti in the 8th minute and sophomore Katie Bonadies in the 37th.

In between, freshman Spartan goalie Jordan-Michelle Santos saved a shots by UC Davis’ Samantha Faber, Lisa Kemp and Gabina Bohlman.

UC Davis out-shot San Jose State for the match, 22-8, but neither team could crack the scoring column through the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Santos made eight saves to earn her first collegiate shutout. Peters wound up with five stops for the home side.

Kamal and Righetti each took two shots for the Spartans, with one each on goal. Freshman Britnee Chesney added one shot, on goal, as did junior Emmy Belding and senior midfielder Katie Bonadies.  Freshman Shanelle Furner also had a shot. For the  Aggies, Faber had a game-high five shots with one on goal.  Bohlman tallied three shots, two of which were on goal.

Spartan defender Brittany Boehm and midfielder Kim Johnston each made the first starts of their Spartan careers.

“For the third game in a row our competitive spirit was good,” stated head coach Jeff Leightman.  “We worked hard form start to finish.  Everybody contributed today.  We need to work on keeping the ball and combining with each other and not having a one-dimensional attack.”

Jessica Ingram really played well for us in the back, she solidified our back line when things stopped working they way we wanted,” added Leightman.  “Kaila Waitley was strong again, as she has been through our first three matches.  In addition, Kim Johnston had a fantastic game in the back as did Michelle Haughey up front.”

San Jose State returns to action on Sunday, August 31, as they host Seattle University.  The Redhawks will enter the match with a record of 1-1-1. Kick-off at Spartan Stadium for the first meeting between the non-conference opponents is set for 1:00 p.m.
