Molina Scores In Women's Soccer Heartbreaker

San Jose-In her first-ever home collegiate match, Megan Molina made her time on the pitch memorable with her first San Jose State goal just two minutes into the second half. However, a free kick by Sacramento State's Laura Bahno from 30 yards away on the right side gave the Hornets the 2-1 win in the second overtime Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

After a foul on San Jose State in the second overtime, Bahno lined up her free kick on the right side of the field 30 yards from the goal. Her kick curved towards the goal, and Spartan goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald just missed punching the ball out of the net before ball crossed the line and landed in the back left corner of the net.

The first half found San Jose State with just one shot, the Spartans came out in the second half looking shoot. Molina took the first shot of the half, putting the ball into the center part of the net from 13 yards away at 47:46.

"As a freshman, it was good to step up and score for us," said Molina. "As my first collegiate goal, it was pretty exciting. It pumped us, got us going and let us know that we were still in the game."

San Jose State then proceeded to take nine more shots in the second half, unfortunately none of them could find the back of the net. Lauren Sanchez took five of her six shots in the game during the half including two on goal.

"I am really proud of this team even though it was not the result that we wanted," said San Jose State head coach Jeff Leightman. "I thought we struggled in the first half, but everyone played well in the second half. It was total team effort tonight and we played hard even though we are hurting right now.

"Megan (Molina) scored a great goal. She showed why we recruited her as she drilled the ball into the back of the net. Meghan Mailwald also had a good match even though she gave up an unfortunate goal in overtime. The ball was high over her head, and it is hard to hard to defend that shot which is angling to the back post. We play with the same ball that was used in the World Cup which is know to move, and unfortunately moved the wrong way for us."

The Spartans next match is Friday, September 3, as the team travels to Cal Poly for a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m.
