SAN JOSE STATE (0-1, 0-0 WAC) vs. SAN DIEGO STATE (1-1, 0-0 MWC)
(SDSU Leads Series, 4-1)
San Diego State blanked San Jose State's conference rival and defending WAC Tournament champion Fresno State, 1-0, in its 2009 opener in San Diego last Friday, August 21. Hayley Marsh, a sophomore defender and transfer from Western Kentucky tallied the lone goal. The Aztecs then lost to Cal State Northridge, also at home, two days later, by the final of 3-1. San Diego State features 2007 Soccer Buzz Freshman All-America second-team selection Aubree Southwick in goal.
The Aztecs are members of the Mountain West Conference, and posted an identical league mark as the Spartans a year ago, of 2-4-1. They were 6-10-3 overall. San Diego State enter Friday night's contest on a nine-match winless streak away from home dating back to the 2008 season. SDSU was 1-6-1 in road games and 0-2-1 at neutral sites for a 1-8-2 record outside of San Diego. The team last won a road match at Cal Poly, 1-0, on August 29, 2008. The Aztecs travel a bit further north this Sunday, August 30, to battle fourth-ranked Stanford.
San Diego State holds a 4-1 edge in the all-time series between these programs, with the Aztecs having won three straight by the aggregate score of 8-0. San Diego State won home meetings in 1996 (3-0) and 1998 (4-0) in shutout fashion, around a 2-1 San Jose State triumph in San Jose in 1997, while the teams were fellow members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Aztecs have since taken a 1-0 decision at Spartan Stadium in 2007, and posted a 3-0 home victory a year ago on September 28.
Mike Friesen is 16-19-6 in his third season in charge of the Aztecs.
