Fullerton, Calif. – Host Cal State Fullerton scored five unanswered goals after surrendering an early strike, to go on to defeat San Jose State, 5-1, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Titan Stadium on Sunday afternoon, August 28.

For the second straight game to open the 2005 season, San Jose State notched the opener, as sophomore Kristin Krale took a cross from freshman Angela Dohrmann and chipped the ball over sophomore Titan goalkeeper Shayla Sabin and in just 5:12 into the contest.

The home side took control from there, tallying three times before the break, with goals coming from seniors Erica Pryor (16:36), Kandace Wilson (24:39) and Rebekah Patrick (28:32). Lisa Kosena, another one of six seniors in the starting lineup, assisted on two of the goals.

Stacey Thompson and Kellie Cox rounded out the scoring with second-half goals.

"For starters, we came out strong and scored first," said Spartan head coach Dave Siracusa. "For the first 20 minutes, we passed the ball well, got a couple of shots off, and were as good as they were. We had to use 19 players in the first half, and just got worn down in the end. This is a young team, and they are going to have to learn from this."

Senior tri-captain Adrienne Herbst made seven saves in goal for San Jose State. Sabin stopped three shots in the Titan net. Cal State Fullerton outshot the visitors, 23-5, and had 11 corner kicks to none by the Spartans.

Cal State Fullerton, picked by league coaches to finish second in the Big West Conference this season, evened its record at 1-1 with the victory, while San Jose State dropped to 0-2.

The Spartans continue a season-long four-game road swing this Tuesday night, August 30, with a 5:00 p.m. non-conference tilt at Long Beach State. San Jose State returns home to kick off a season-long four-game homestand on Friday, September 9, hosting Cal Poly at 4:00 p.m. at Spartan Field.
