San Jose, Calif. – Freshman midfielder Alex Fries scored 15 seconds into the second half to lead visiting UC Irvine to a 2-1 victory over San Jose State in non-conference women’s soccer action at Spartan Stadium on August 26. The game was the 2005 season opener for both teams.

On as a halftime substitute, Fries, playing in her her first collegiate game, broke down the right flank and powered a shot past senior Spartan goalkeeper Adrienne Herbst at the 45:15 mark, and the Anteaters held on from there.

San Jose State (0-1) got on the board first, as freshman Liz Behlen tallied her first collegiate goal at 21:29, with assists going to sophomores Nicole Irwin and Kristin Krale.

UC Irvine (1-0) equalized at the 30:16 mark on an impressive, long-range direct freekick from junior Britney Webster from approximately 25 yards out, which hit the crossbar and went in. Webster had scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win for UCI in Irvine a year ago in the 2004 opener.

"We made two mistakes," said second-year Spartan head coach Dave Siracusa. "We had a silly hand ball (which led to the first goal), and we didn’t come out ready in the second half. We didn’t take advantage of our chances in the first half."

San Jose State outshot UC Irvine, eight to three in the first half, but was outshot, 10-2, following the intermission. Herbst finished with five saves in goal for the home side. Freshman Erin Henry stopped a pair of shots for the Anteaters.

The Spartans now embark on a season-long four-game road swing, beginning with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, August 28. San Jose State returns home to kick off a season-long four-game homestand on Friday, September 9, hosting Cal Poly at 4:00 p.m. at Spartan Field.
