Irvine, Calif.-----Britney Webster converted a loose ball in front of the San Jose State net for the game’s only goal as UC Irvine defeated the Spartans, 1-0, in the season-opening non-conference match for both teams.

The Anteaters (1-0) outshot the Spartans, 13-5, en route to the victory. Webster’s goal came at 63:19 off an assist from Alyson Spencer.

Adrienne Herbst of San Jose State was credited with five saves. UC Irvine goalkeeper Marissa Welliver did not make a save in the contest.

"We played real good defense. We thwarted their attack most of the time," said San Jose State coach Dave Siracusa about the season opener. "Most of the game was played in our half. It was a 'slugfest.' We just came out on the wrong end.

"The last part of the game we were atatcking more. We had some opportunities to put the ball in the frame at the end," noted the coach who felt freshman Jackie Cruz had the best scoring chance to tie the contest late in the match.

San Jose State moves on to Pepperdine for an August 29 afternoon match.
