Women's soccer plays to 1-1 tie at LMU in opener

Los Angeles, Calif. - The San Jose State University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Loyola Marymount University in the 2006 season opener for both sides at Sullivan Field on Friday, August 25.

The host Lions of the West Coast Conference got on the board first at the 9:19 mark, with Tiffany Harrison heading home a cross from the right by Amanda Lernor.

LATE FIRST-HALF EQUALIZER

San Jose State equalized just before the halftime break, as senior tri-captain Nicole Martinez came off the bench to score her second career goal as a Spartan at 41:06. Kaila Waitley crossed from the right, fellow sophomore Jennifer Guadagnolo flicked it toward junior Lion goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek, and Martinez found the empty net after Slovek mishandled the ball. Guadagnolo and Waitley were each credited with assists.

With the game tied at 1-1, Slovek went to her right to save a penalty kick attempt by SJSU sophomore forward Jessica Scott in the 77th minute. Scott had four shots to lead SJSU and share the game high with LMU’s Harrison and Tana Smothermon.

“I thought we played really well,” said San Jose State head coach Dave Siracusa following the game. “The first 10 minutes were ours until they scored. After that, it was us again. The shots were even at the half (4-4). We built the ball a little bit. At halftime, we talked about playing to feet. Jackie Zabek came on and the game changed. She won everything in the air. Nicole Martinez and Cynthia Pinkney added an extra gear as well. Overall, it was a good day. We tied a team from a tough conference on the road. I’m happy with the result.”

DAYTON STELLAR IN DEBUT

Redshirt freshman Marissa Dayton, making her first career start in goal for the Spartans, was credited with nine saves in her debut. Slovek stopped six shots for LMU, including the penalty.

“Marissa played great,” added Siracusa. “She was credited with nine saves, with three from point-blank range. There was one that she made a mistake on, but she came screaming across the (goal) line to make up for it.”

LMU outshot San Jose State, 17-12, and had six corner kicks to five by the Spartans.

San Jose State continues a season-long four-game road stretch to open the 2006 campaign at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Friday, September 1. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
