Women's Soccer Falls To #22 Santa Clara

San Jose, Calif. - In its first game under new head coach Jeff Leightman, the San Jose State University women’s soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Santa Clara University in both teams' season opener at Spartan Stadium on Friday, August 22.

The loss leaves San Jose State at 0-1-0. Santa Clara, ranked #22 in the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll, improved to 1-0-0 on the season.

The Spartans started seven newcomers, six of them true freshmen, including all four defenders and goalkeeper Jordan-Michelle Santos.

“There were a lot of nerves at the beginning of the game, but after we got those first touches, we calmed down and in the end, we played pretty well together,” said freshman defender Britnee Chesney. “They were quick on the ball and moved it well. The freshmen were able to play together and improved as we moved along.”

Santos stopped her first three collegiate shots on goal before Bronco forward Lexi Orand took a pass down the left flank from defender Lindsey Johnson and put the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give Santa Clara a 1-0 lead at 22:29.

Ten minutes later, Santa Clara struck again. Jenny LaPonte took a cross from the left off the foot of Lexi Orand and put her shot in at the far post. Katherine Reynolds was also credited with an assist and the Broncos led, 2-0, in the 33rd minute.

San Jose State senior co-captain Jennifer Guadagnolo had the Spartans’ only chance in the first half, but her shot sailed wide left and the half ended with Santa Clara leading, 2-0.

In the second half, Santa Clara junior Kiki Bosio took a point blank shot which Santos stopped, but the rebound came right to Anessa Patton who was crashing the net and she was able to tap the ball into the open goal to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead at the 50:22 mark.

The Spartans' best chance of the second half came on a free kick just outside the penalty box. Guadagnolo took the kick, but it sailed just over the net.

Guadagnolo led the Spartans with two shots. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Righetti and freshman Lauren Sanchez each had one shot. The Broncos were led by Orand with a goal on four shots, three on net and an assist. Patton and LaPonte each had a goal on their only shots with assists going to Bosio, Johnson and Reynolds.

“I thought the freshmen played really well tonight and overall we competed well,” said Leightman. “Santa Clara is a fantastic opponent. The problem was that they play at a speed that is different than what we have been training at, so it took us a while to adjust to the speed of play.

“We played well at times and not so good in others. The three goals they got were when we got disorganized and we were punished for it. I think we got better as a team tonight, but we need to be more consistent in training and we need to bring a higher level of play right from the start of the game.

“We started eight new players who had never played at the Division I level, and we went up against a nationally-ranked opponent. I saw a marked change from the beginning of the game to the end. If we can continue improving, we will be much better.”

San Jose State returns to Spartan Stadium on Sunday, August 24, at 1:00 p.m., when it hosts #17 California. The match will be the Bears' season opener.
