USF Tops Spartans In Season Opener, 2-1

San Francisco, Calif.-----Kelsey Lord's late second-half goal was all the offense San Jose State University was able to produce in a 2-1 season-opening loss to the University of San Francisco in a non-conference women's soccer match.

Lord's goal was generated by teammate Kayla Santacruz gaining an advantage on two USF (1-0) defenders. Lord left-footed in her first goal of the season inside the near post at 72:12 into the match.

The Spartans (0-1) were on the short end of a pair of USF scores in a 6:28 span near the mid-point of the first half. Freshmen Hanna Haanes, a member of the Norwegian U-23 team, and Christina Moberg scored for the Dons. Haanes took a Moberg feed, broke away from the Spartan defense at midfield, pulled San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald out from the goal and had little trouble finding the back of the net for the game's first score.

Moberg added USF's final score of the match converting a penalty kick at 23:37.

"Honestly, I thought we were awful in the first half. We were making poor decisions. Our concentration level was poor. I thought our speed of play was poor. Our speed of movement was poor. Honestly, we didn't do much good in the first half," said San Jose State coach Jeff Leightman.

"We came out flat. They outplayed us," Lord added. "In the second half, we came back and played with heart and we played for each other instead of playing individually."

"Even in the second half, we came out sluggish. Then, we started to come on midway through the second half. Once we scored and created some urgency, we were good. We put them under tons of pressure and, quite frankly, should have got a second goal. You can't spot teams a two-goal lead," the Spartans' coach concluded.

San Jose State returns to action, Sunday, August 22, at Santa Clara in a non-conference match. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. in Buck Shaw Stadium.
