San Jose, Calif. - A pair of goals in each half propelled the 22nd-ranked Santa Clara University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over host San Jose State University in the 2009 season opener for both squads at Spartan Stadium on Friday night, August 21.
The match was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,108, and marked the very first official San Jose State athletic contest on the brand-new FieldTurf inside Spartan Stadium.
After allowing scoring chances through a pair of defensive miscommunications in the opening seconds of the game, the play stabilized for the most part for the first half-hour. In the 25th minute, Anessa Patton's corner kick was flicked on in the penalty box by the head of a teammate. Highly-touted freshman Olivia Klei, earning the start in her college debut, poked a low shot that was destined for the back of the net, only for Spartan sophomore left back Lauren Ng-Pinkerton to clear it off the line. Junior goalkeeper Nina Butera then pounced on the ball.
Santa Clara looked the better side throughout, but the Spartans almost took the lead in the 32nd minute on what would ultimately be their only shot in the match. Lauren Sanchez hit a crisp ball out of her defensive third, that junior co-captain Katie Bonadies sent on to senior striker Emmy Belding. The Spartans' leading returning goal-scorer touched it past the Bronco defender and was first to the ball, but her shot from 17 yards went wide left of the target.
Santa Clara finally struck twice late in the period, getting goals from senior captain Kiki Bosio and Lauren Matheson within just two minutes apart heading into the break. Bosio's opener at 39:16 came off a right-sided cross from fellow senior captain and M.A.C. Hermann Trophy candidate Katherine Reynolds, and a flick in the penalty area by Maxine Goynes. The Broncos upped their advantage at 41:03 as Matheson was first to a deflected loose ball in the box to slam a low and powerful shot into the net, unassisted, for her first collegiate goal in her debut.
The visitors put the result out of doubt as Amanda Webster and Goynes tallied goals in the 67th and 81st minutes. Webster took a deep ball over the top down the right flank from senior captain Jordan Angeli, and shot low diagonally into the left corner past a sprawled-out Butera for her first college strike. Goynes capped the offense as she latched onto a punt by sophomore goalkeeper Bianca Henninger, nodded the ball past Butera and tapped into the empty net.
Early in the second half, in the 47th minute, Angeli put a point-blank, diving header at the back post to a right-sided cross from Reynolds, only for Butera to deny the opportunity for her first save of the season.
Butera would finish with four stops over the 90 minutes, while Henninger did not need to make a save in notching the shutout for Santa Clara. Santa Clara out-shot San Jose State, 14-1.
Freshmen Kelsey Lord, Kelsey Costan, Laura Hill, Amanda Simat and Krista Cullen all made their college debuts in the match, with Lord earning a start up top in the Spartans' three-forward alignment. Junior striker Katie Knopp also appeared in her first major college match after the junior college All-American's transfer from Solano Community College.
San Jose State continues non-conference play at home against San Diego State next Friday night, August 28. Kick-off at Spartan Stadium is slated for approximately 7:30 p.m.
