Women's Soccer Hosts #15 Santa Clara

The Particulars The San Jose State women’s soccer team hosts rival Santa Clara Friday night under the lights at Spartan Stadium in both teams’ 2011 season opener.
Series History Santa Clara has won all 15 matches against San Jose State since the two teams first met in 1995. The Broncos are 6-0 in the series during the month of August, and have an 8-0 unblemished mark as the road team. Last season, SJSU’s Katie Knopp scored her first goal of the season and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute, but the ninth-ranked Broncos scored two goals in a three-minute span to win 2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium.
About San Jose State The Spartans (0-0-0) return a wealth of players this season that helped lead the team to a 12-7-2 record in 2010 and its second-straight WAC regular season title. That includes 2010 first team all-WAC player Kelsey Lord and second team all-WAC honoree Lauren Sanchez. Lord set the SJSU single-season mark in assists last year with 11. Sanchez started all 21 games for the Spartans, posting two goals and an assist.
Senior Jessica Ingram returns with her second straight preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year nod. Goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald also returns after a stellar 2010 campaign that saw her set a new single-season mark in solo shutouts with six, and land in the top five for single-season saves (96) and goals against average (1.15).
About Santa Clara The No. 15 Broncos (0-0-0) are fresh off a second-place finish in the West Coast Conference and a trip to the NCAA Tournament’s second round in 2010. This year the team is picked in the WCC preseason coaches’ poll to finish second behind Portland. Santa Clara has 2010 WCC Freshman of the Year on the roster in Julie Johnston, who led the team with five assists. She also added two goals for nine total points on the season.
WAC Preseason Poll San Jose State, the two-time defending regular-season WAC champions, was chosen as one of two favorites to win the WAC Championship in 2011.
The conferences eight head coaches cast the votes and selected both the Spartans and Utah State to top their preseason poll with three first-place votes and 42 points each.

Home Sweet Home The Spartans had little trouble defending its home turf in 2010, going 6-1-1 in games at Spartan Stadium. SJSU is 68-68-10 all-time at home, including 62-51-9 in Spartan Stadium and a 5-17-1 mark at Spartan Field. The home record also includes a 1997 home victory over Portland State at Municipal Stadium.
Making Them Count Opponents outshot the Spartans, 289-276, last season, but SJSU was more accurate and found the net more often. San Jose State outscored its opponents, 41-25, in 2010 and had a better shot percentage (14.9) and shots on goal percentage (49.3) during the year. Out of 13 returning players who took at least four shots last season, four of them had a shooting percentage of at least 25 percent, and seven of them had a shot on goal percentage of at least 50 percent.
